I hate to say something as unoriginal as "Makeup is a great way to look and feel younger! Woo-hoo!" But the truth is—if you know a few tricks—makeup is, in fact, a pretty great way to look younger. Here's a for-instance: One of my favorite tricks is to swipe a creamy eyeliner pencil in dark brown across the creases of my eyelids, then fan it out in both directions and blend away. As you get older, your eyes can seem like they're shrinking, and this technique brings back depth and structure. It's a great tip to use if you wake up with sodium eyes (a.k.a. the puffies) to contour your eyelids. Some of my most effective tricks are the ones I use on my celebrity clients. But anyone can make a few simple changes and look years younger. And to that I say—with no dorkiness whatsoever—woo-hoo.

OPEN YOUR EYES
Kate Winslet at the Golden Globe Awards in 2012
For a dramatic look, I lined only Kate's upper
lashes. Putting liner underneath your eyes can highlight dark circles
and make your eyes appear smaller. And just like highlighter, don't fear
metallic shadows. Using a warm metallic—peach, rose, gold—lights up the
whole face (try Tarte Amazonian Clay Cream Eyeshadow in Shimmering Bronze). Just avoid silver or anything with gray in it, which draws out dark circles.
DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHINE
Milla Jovovich at the Academy Awards in 2012
Most
people don't realize that you get a double lift from highlighting the
cheekbones. It illuminates the cheeks and brings attention to your eyes.
What I like about the shimmer on Milla's cheekbones is that it's soft
and subtle. And to make it subtle, it's got to be just the right
iridescent shade of peach champagne (L'Oréal Paris Magic Lumi Highlighter is perfect). If it's too white or too gold, it looks patchy. For dark skin, choose a bronzy hue, like Nars Multiple in South Beach.
FILL IN YOUR BROWS
Anna Paquin at the Scream 4 premiere in 2011
Our
hair gets thinner as we get older, which is why lush, full brows are
such a staple of youth. Anna has naturally thick brows, but I still like
to fill them in with powder. Choose a shade somewhere between the color
of your skin and the color of your brows (I like Laura Mercier Brow Powder Duos). Never try to reshape your eyebrows with the powder, though—you won't fool anyone.
WARM UP
Jessica Lange at the Emmy Awards in 2012
The
takeaway here is to warm up the skin with bronzer. I applied it to
Jessica's forehead, nose, and cheeks and added an extra layer on the
cheekbones to make them look really sculpted. I prefer a powder formula
with little or no iridescence—Nars Bronzing Powder is my go-to these days. To continue the warmth, I used brown eyeliner; it's much softer and more forgiving than black.
