Surprise! Pastel shadows are back for spring, though this season they have a muted '70s vibe that's way cooler than your average robin's-egg blue. "Keep the look modern by blending the color over the entire lid and brow bone," says Black, who recommends starting with an eyelid primer, since pastels can oxidize and darken when exposed to the natural oils on your eyelids (We like Dior Backstage Eye Prime). Then layer on mascara. "It anchors the dreamy look and gives it a bit of an edge."

We
know peach is sweet. But peach is also great at warming up your
complexion without going full-on bronze. "It's the perfect multiuse
color," says Black. And the easiest way to try it is with a cream
formula. "Creams tend to settle and fade throughout the day, so make
sure to choose a shade a little more intense than you want the final
look to be," says Black.

PINK-RED LIPSTICK
Not
quite red and not quite pink, this color of the moment combines the
best of both shades: It's classic, sexy, and flirty, especially with a
high-shine finish and mega-watt lashes. After applying Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Crème in Goddess,
Black loads up the mascara to give the look "a fun twist." And if you
like a more subtle look, "apply your lipstick and then blot it to create
the perfect, just-been-kissed stain."

"Yellow
eyeliner is one of the most unusual color trends this spring," says
Black. And while it may seem strange and supertricky to pull off, you
can rest assured that it's easier than it sounds. "The new pencil
formulas make it easy to use, and when done in place of your everyday
liner, it's a fun way to experiment with color," says Black, who uses Revlon Photoready Kajal in Matte Lemon.
Just be sure to follow Black's lead and keep it away from your bottom
lash line. Otherwise, "it can make your eyes look a bit puffy," she
says.

Not
all spring makeup has to be soft and flowery. Case in point: the loads
of wine-colored lipsticks beauty brands are launching this season. To
keep this dramatic shade from looking too heavy, Black suggests pairing
it with curled lashes, subtle contouring, and a touch of highlighter on the inner corners of the eyes, like Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Goddess.
"The combo of intense dark lips and a fresh nude face is a modern way
to approach spring makeup and keeps this deep shade from sliding into
goth territory," she said. And before you slick on the plummy shade,
start by filling in your lips with a chocolate-brown pencil. "It ensures
the shade won't look too purple," she says.

GOLD EYES AND NAILS
Forget metallics. The way to wear gold this spring is in the form of loose, chunky, in-your-face glitter. That's right, G-L-I-T-T-E-R.
But before you laugh, hear us out: "Sophisticated glitter may sound
like an oxymoron, but this subtle application around the eyes really
does elevate it to grown-up status," says Black, who presses Make Up For Ever Glitters
underneath the lower lash lines and finishes off with black mascara and
a smudge of white liner along the inner rim. And the same goes for the
nails. When looking for a gold polish this spring, the chunkier and
fuller coverage your polish, the better.

Spring's
boldest liner brings to mind artist Yves Klein's favorite shade—and
it's just as astonishingly vibrant and beautiful. "Bright blue is a
gorgeous color, but it can be difficult to figure out how to wear it,"
says Black. "Try creating an exaggerated cat eye using a gel liner
formula, then trade in your black mascara for a matching blue shade.
It's daring but also surprisingly flattering."

ALL OVER NUDE
Nude makeup—not to be confused with no-makeup makeup—was one of the biggest trends on the spring runways. And when used correctly, it can make your eyes look bigger
and your cheekbones look sharper (who wouldn't want that?). "They don't
have to be boring," says Black. The trick is to vary the texture and
tone of your nudes on each feature. For example, keep your blush matte,
your shadow metallic, and your lips glossy. Black even likes nude lipsticks with a touch of shimmer. "It's a subtle way to add dimensional and textural interest to your look."
