The 7 Best Beauty Statements of Milan Fashion Week: From Prada’s Jeweled Barrettes to Freida Pinto’s Plum Lip
What’s that old saying? Nothing risked, nothing gained.
And if a look at the best hair and makeup moments at the Milan shows
this week is any indication, the adage still holds true. From dramatic
plays on proportion (Prada’s jewel-adorned ponytails!) to bold painterly strokes (Fendi’s
liquid black eyes!), there were plenty of welcome surprises on the
Italian beauty front. Perhaps the biggest shock of the week arrived at Gucci, where designer Alessandro Michele’s
runway troupe let their hair down into dreamy, slept-on waves. The
result was fashion month’s most memorable make-under yet. Here, seven
things we learned from the Milan runways this week.

Evening hair just got a lot more interesting, thanks to the glittering, oversize statement pins spotted at Prada (shown) and Dolce & Gabbana.
Whether you go for a charmingly off-kilter ponytail or flyaway ladylike
twist, you're going to want to finish the look with a little something
that sparkles.

The time has come to take the short-hair plunge—minus the commitment. Max Mara’s bobbed army of Marilyn Monroes for the runway, including a bodacious Gigi Hadid, were the recipients of some stealth trompe l’oeil bobby pinning, courtesy of hairstylist Sam McKnight. At Missoni, Paul Hanlon sculpted even waist-length hair into wavy crops that seemed to defy gravity.

The quickest way to reimagine your lip color comes down to
experimenting with the finish—and this week, the spectrum ranged from a
powdery cherry stain (Tod’s) to a vinyl chocolate gloss (Trussardi). Front row at Ferragamo, actress Frieda Pinto chose a velvety-matte plum as the perfect counterpart to her textural black halter dress.

By now, the importance of black eyeliner
in your makeup arsenal is beyond question—and the Milan shows offered
up still more ideas for experimenting with a classic. At Fendi (shown),
things took a turn for the abstract with a scribble of winged liner and
an intentional smudge of mascara—which, up close, recalled the quirky contours of a Rorschach blot. Versace's tough kohl-rimmed eyes
conjured iconic she's-with-the-band cool—and were finished with bit of
high-shine Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream onto the lids.

There is no such thing as a bad hair day—starting now. The night before the Gucci show, models were asked to sleep on damp strands to encourage small kinks and imperfections in their pillow-made bohemian waves.

The easiest way to change your look involves a comb and a flick of
the wrist: Center-parted hair was ubiquitous on the runways—with the
leap between Emilio Pucci’s jet-setting sexpots and Alberta Ferretti’s new romantics showing off the versatility of the trend. Solidifying the center part’s It status? Salma Hayek, who showed up to the Giamba show in a glamorous incarnation of the look.
Brunettes may have reigned in New York—but if designer Tomas Maier
has anything to say about it, now’s the time to paint it red. Half a
dozen models with hair ranging from rich auburn brown to glorious Titian
red walked in his Bottega Veneta show, including a gingery-blonde Edie Campbell. If that’s not a vote of confidence, we don’t know what is.
